I’m mad; furious, in fact. All these years I thought I was feeding my family healthy foods; when in reality, I have been feeding them genetically modified organisms (GMOs) without my knowledge or consent.
What is a GMO or genetically engineered food? According to the CArightToKnow.org website:”A genetically engineered food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature and is experimental. Many of the foods we currently eat and feed our families (including certain baby formulas and a high percentage of corn, soy, cotton and sugar beets commonly used in processed foods sold in the U.S.), but we don’t know which ones without labeling.”
Have you ever wondered why when we were kids no one was allergic to peanuts, had gastro-intestinal problems or was on ADHD medicine? When we were kids, the worst malady was some distant cousin name Sheldon who had to use an inhaler when he got overexcited. Now kids have all kinds of problems and coincidentally, they have been eating GMO foods for their entire lives.
A year ago I really didn’t even know what a GMO was. Now my husband meets every mention of a newly unearthed “GMO nugget of information” with an eye roll or sometimes just an eye glaze if he’s feeling particularly generous and is pretending to be interested.
The truth is I can’t blame him. I have become completely obsessed with GMOs. My friend, Amy and I like to scare each other all day long with emails and videos about what we’ve inadvertently been eating for the past twenty years. It’s kind of like sending out positive messages and vibes, but in reverse.
In the midst of the eye rolling, email scaring and practically starving from fear of eating, I have figured out some stuff. I am a mom, not an expert, so do what you will with that information, but I have extraordinary Googling skills and above average B.S. detectors. And by the way, the experts in the FDA have been allowing you to poison yourself and your family for almost twenty years. Surprise!
