Flu Shot or Juice Shot?

I picked my son up from school early the other day so we could go to the movies. It was a rare treat (for me) because he hates to miss any amount of school. While I was waiting for him to come to the office and wondering if he was really my kid since he would rather go to 7thperiod than see Oz the Great and Powerful in 3D, I noticed the inordinate amount of zombie-like kids waiting to be picked up by their parents. I could only assume they weren’t off to a secret movie date or even an orthodontist appointment. They looked like Typhoid Mary had sneezed on them.

The frazzled school nurse told me that if I hadn’t gotten my flu shot I should probably leave the plague infested area. I told her that I NEVER get a flu shot and that I would be fine. Sure enough, I lived to blog about it. It is two weeks later and I didn’t have so much as a sniffle. And while most of my son’s close friends have had the flu he has remained perfectly healthy.
This is how we have avoided the flu and the flu shot. Aside from eating a non-GMO, organic diet rich in fruits and vegetables, we take vitamin D3 every day (3,000-5,000 IU), a good probiotic and we juice most days.

In the winter months I make us fresh grapefruit or orange juice, not a lot, just like 4 ounces a day. I keep the white stuff on that is right under the skin and juice that too. I figure there is a reason these fruits are in season during the winter. We follow it up with green juice, again maybe 6-8 ounces, not a huge amount. Now here is the part that you probably won’t like, but I think it is way better than injecting one’s body with dead flu; garlic.

If you think you’ve been exposed to the flu, or you just want to hedge your bets, juice this:
Cucumber
Cabbage (a little goes a long way but this is good for your gut which keeps you healthy)
Celery
Parsley
Cilantro
1 clove of garlic (you can start with a half and work up)
Spinach
Kale (really any greens and rotate the greens you use due to all of the oxalates)
You can use a little bit of peeled lemon, lime, pear or beet to make it more palatable.
The parsley cancels out the garlic breath. I promise. I’m going to be honest, I can only do the garlic once a week or if I feel like I might be getting sick. It’s not my favorite, but it beats the heck out of the flu.

So listen to what you mother said; wash your hands a lot during cold and flu season. Do not use antibacterial soap as it messes up the good flora in your intestines and lowers your resistance to germs. Take your vitamins, probiotics, eat and juice your veggies and sneak off the movies or do whatever makes you happy; even if that means going to your 7th period class. It boosts your immune system.
