Berry Kale Smoothie

If you read this blog regularly, you know I am a huge proponent of juicing. I drink a green juice every morning because it provides micronutrients that go straight to the cells. Recently, I have added in a smoothie as part of my daily ritual. It provides fiber, macronutrients, vitamins and it goes a long way to keeping me satiated and full of energy.kale smoothie

Here are some of the ingredients that I use regularly. As always, USE ORGANIC only or you will be ingesting lots of pesticides.

WARNING: Consult your doctor if you are on a blood thinner, including aspirin because most of these ingredients are natural blood thinners.

Evan’s Big Strong Heart Smoothie

  • 1 scoop of Garden of Life RAW Protein Powder– I like chocolate or vanilla flavored.  Provides 17 grams of protein, beyond organic, vegan, Non-GMO, 13 raw and organic sprouts, contains probiotics and enzymes, trace minerals and fat soluble vitamins
  • 1 T Cacao – fiber, iron, magnesium, rich in flavanols and polyphenols
  • 1 t Maca powder – stress fighting adaptogen (stabilizes and regulates), fights fatigue, boosts libido, increases energy. Do not use more than 1 tsp.
  • 1 T Chia seeds – Omegas 3,6, and 9 fatty acids which support brain, cell and cardiovascular health, high in fiber
  • Cayenne pepper– start with a little, you can always add more. Aids in digestion, anti-fungal, circulatory stimulant, joint pain relief, helps reduce the formation of blood clots and may reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke
  • 1 t Turmeric – anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant – may aid in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, cancer
  • 1 t Cinnamon – lowers bad cholesterol (LDL), may aid in Type 2 diabetes as it lowers blood sugar and increases insulin production, boosts memory function.
  • Cardamom – just a pinch, it’s strong. Aids in digestion, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, cancer fighting, lowers blood pressure
  • 4 stalks of Kale – Raw kale is good for providing vitamin K, lignans, phytonutrients, and may prevent glaucoma.
  • 1/2 cup Blueberries – high in vitamin C, contains anthocyanins, a sub class of flavonoids, which give them their blue color and may prevent heart disease and cancer and boost brain function
  • 1/2 cup Cherries– good for your heart health, prevents cancer, boosts brain power, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory.
  • 1 Banana – high in fiber, high in fructooligosaccharide (FOS) which helps your body absorb calcium and promotes good gut health, rich in B6 which wards off cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Ice – start with 5 cubes, add more based on your taste
  • Water or nut milk – start with  a half cup of liquid and adjust to your taste

  1. Lauren, what are the amounts of each that you put in? I ironically have all of the above ingredients and am always looking for more detoxing nutritious foods / drinks to incorporate into my diet and that of my family. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I purposefully did not put amounts so that people could customize it, but I probably should have.
      3-4 stalks of kale
      tsp maca
      tsp turmeric
      tsp cinnamon
      TBS chia seeds
      TBS cacao
      pinch of cardamom
      a couple of pinches of cayenne
      handful of berries and cherries
      1 banana
      start with 5 ice cubes and a half cup liquid

  2. Thanks Lauren. I have never used the chia seeds before, bought them last week as I keep seeing them in different recipes. Glad to have the measurements. Cannot wait to make it tomorrow. 🙂
