The Answer to Healthful Snacking

lauren 2In honor of World Health Day today, an event sponsored by the World Health Organization, I am going to share with you the one tip that has changed my health for the better and can change yours too.

The one thing that I have done to improve my overall health, reduce my weight and mitigate the chance of contracting a disease is that I have eliminated processed foods from my diet. Before you exclaim that you can’t do without these conveniences, hear me out. I have some good solutions and substitutes below. If you are trying to avoid disease or obesity, this is one simple thing that can work for you.

Processed foods are convenient and tasty but they are full of chemicals, salt, sugar, fat and they are highly addictive. Michael Moss wrote the N.Y. Times Best Selling book, SALT SUGAR FAT. He has spun a terrifyingly true tale of how these highly addictive “foods” are formulated to keep us coming back for more. salt-sugar-fat-book

These processed foods do not so much contain food as food like substances. Our bodies cannot recognize these substances and cannot nourish us with these chemicals. They just make us sick and fat.

We are all busy and some processed foods have their place and are fine. For example, breakfast cereals such as Fruit Loops are not food and no one should be giving this junk to their children. But Ezekiel cereal has nothing but sprouted grains and legumes and is perfectly healthy.

If you have to have a processed food make sure it is organic and has a limited ingredient list that contains more food than words you cannot recognize.

My best advice to you is that if you have a “go to” processed food that you like, make it homemade. If you like chips like I do, heat your oven to 400 degrees, slice up a few organic potatoes (potatoes are one of the most highly pesticide laden foods), put the potato slices on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, salt them and bake them for about 30 minutes. Keep an eye on them since all ovens are different. Viola, no fat, very little salt and you have a snack that is actually derived from a food that comes from the earth not a bag with an extended shelf life.

If you like cake or cookies, make them from scratch, and a box mix does not count for scratch. Do not keep processed snacks in the house. If you are forced to make it, you will have to ask yourself how much you really want it. If you do, go ahead and make it and enjoy it, whatever “it” is.

Food is not bad. Processed food is bad and it is making us sick, fat and addicted.

  1. Great post Lauren!!! All so true……after taking the plunge of not relying on the processed stuff , you see it is not that difficult…..I need to get that book….
