We have a major health crisis in the United States of America.
Think about all of the families you know. I would venture to say that there is at least one person in each family who suffers from a chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, auto-immune disease or gastrointestinal disease.
If they do not suffer from those maladies they may have a condition such as infertility, asthma, allergies or ADHD.
From the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: “As of 2012, about half of all adults – 117 million people- had one or more chronic health conditions.”
From the NIA (National Institutes of Health): “Approximately 69% of adults are overweight or obese, with 78 million adult Americans considered obese.”
Also from NIH: “Fifty-nine percent of adults used prescription drugs in 2011-2012. And 15 percent of them took five or more prescription drugs.”
We have come to accept this as normal. It is not. How can we accept that half of us have chronic disease, 59% of us are on prescription drugs and 69% of us are overweight?
Think about how you want to age and consider the aforementioned statistics. The odds for aging without becoming ill are not in your favor. There are many things that are contributing to this sickness epidemic but aside from smoking, the main thing that sickens us is what we eat. The excellent news is that you can control and change that.
You are unknowingly eating a diet of that consists of genetically engineered foods and animals that eat genetically engineered foods.
According to the Non-GMO Project website: “GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.”
Approximately 90% of these crops are genetically modified: corn, soy, canola, sugar beet and cotton. Some summer and zucchini squash, and most Hawaiian Papaya are genetically modified. As of 2011 Alfalfa is now a GMO crop. The animals you eat are fed GMOs and therefore, you are ingesting GMOs too.
Most GM (genetically modified) crops are engineered to tolerate a weed killer called Roundup®, whose active ingredient is glyphosate. These crops, known as Roundup-Ready crops, accumulate high levels of glyphosate that remain in the food. Corn and cotton varieties are engineered to produce an insecticide called Bt-toxin.
Bt corn and cotton are registered with the EPA as pesticides. Take that in for a moment. Your corn on the cob produces pesticides from within that bust open the stomach linings of the bugs that eat it. That may account for the rise in gastrointestinal problems.
GMOs have never been proven safe for human consumption and have actually been shown to cause tumor growth in rats.
I know what you might be thinking, “I eat healthy. I doubt I’m eating GMOs.” WRONG. You are eating them, trust me. If you eat tortillas, tortilla chips, potato chips, corn or anything with corn – that includes high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup, diet anything, anything with sugar, canola oil, cottonseed oil, protein bars, cereal, or cereal bars, bread, mayonnaise, salad dressing, ketchup, Asian food, Mexican food, any kind of soy burger, vegetarian meat substitute or tofu, eggs, luncheon meat, or any meat, chicken, or pork (because animals eat GMO crops and then it is passed on to us) or let’s just say anything in a box or bag that is NOT USDA Certified Organic, you are eating GMOs.
Would the FDA let us eat something that was bad for us? Can you say big Ag business (which fuels political campaigns with their sphere of influence and money)? A huge coincidence occurred when GMOs were introduced 20 plus years ago. The company, Monsanto, that makes Roundup pesticide, also made and patented the Roundup ready GMO seeds. These genetically altered seeds could withstand tons of the pesticide spray, unlike natural seeds. The former Vice President of Monsanto, Michael R. Taylor, was coincidentally the Deputy Commissioner for Policy at the FDA when GM seeds were introduced. He said that these seeds were no different and needed no study. This is also the guy you can thank for the Bovine Growth Hormone in your milk. He is presently back at the FDA as Food Czar. GM potatoes, apples and salmon have all recently been approved for market.
GMO foods are not labeled as such. How can you avoid GMOs? You can eat anything that has the “USDA Certified Organic,” seal on it and anything that has the “NON GMO Project “seal on it. It doesn’t mean there are not traces of GMOs in it due to cross-pollination, but the levels will be very low.
Any product or produce that is organic cannot knowingly use GMO products or seeds. Anything that has the NON GMO Project seal on it has been verified by a third-party not to have any GMOs in it. Buy organic meat if you want to avoid ingesting GMOs via animals.
Avoid any dairy or if you must eat it, make sure it does not contain the growth hormone rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone). rBHG makes the cows produce more milk but also produces a ton of puss in the milk so then the cows have to be shot up with antibiotics. rBGH has been found to cause cancer. One of the men who purportedly did the research on rBGH went out and bought a cow for his family.
I know this is hard news, but there is much evidence that suggests that eating a whole foods, plant-based diet is the BEST way to stave off disease. This means no red meat, poultry, fish, pork, dairy (cheese, milk, half and half, cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt), or eggs. Basically if it has a face or a mother or came from something with a face or a mother. Don’t eat it.
I just lost 99% of you reading this. I hear you. It took me three years to fully take the plunge. It was a journey of baby steps and sometimes big steps. You don’t have to do it all. But you do need to make changes if you want to be a healthy old person. You can live for a long time in this day in age. But chances are you will be overweight on five prescriptions and always fighting off one disease or another and managing side effects of medications.
That is fine. I get it. But if you want to know more about taking steps to grow old without disease please read on. Any level of change is EXCELLENT and will bring about more change. Even something as simple as deciding not to eat meat when you dine out is huge. You can control the type of meat you eat at home, but you will most certainly be getting animals who were fed GMOs at restaurants. Yes, even if it says meat is “all natural” on the menu.
Reject the new normal of ill health. Please read on and may good health be yours.
