It is important to be informed when it comes to choosing a sunscreen. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer is on the rise. There is no conclusive evidence about why this is occurring, but there seems to be a link to UVA exposure over the years; especially getting sunburns as a child.
There are two types of rays, UVA and UVB. UVA or just UV rays are more damaging and penetrate deeper into the skin. They are responsible for accelerated aging, may suppress the immune system and may cause skin cancer. Continue reading “How to Select the Best Sunscreen”
I am always on the hunt for better, less toxic beauty and personal care products that work. This is the latest list of things I love. My friend Nicki recently spent the night and verified these products as “girlfriend sharing” worthy. It was evident that I had some winners when she placed an order to 100% Pure and Josie Maran before even leaving my house.
I use a lot of products from Alba Botanica. They are free of parabens, phthalates and the company does not perform animal testing. They did not score the lowest that one can score on the toxicity scale at https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ but mainly because there is information missing.
Recently the Honest Company was accused of using Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in their detergent. SLS may cause endocrine disruption or even cancer. I reached out and asked the Honest Company about the accusations. They said their products contain SCS, a gentler form of SLS that is coconut based. They said they have a study showing this. I asked to see the study. They would not provide it. I have been researching alternative detergents and cleaning products. I came across this site. I have not tried the products yet, but I am going to.
Your skin is your largest organ and anything you place on your skin is absorbed into your body. That is why it is so important to make sure your skincare, personal care and beauty products are as non-toxic as possible. It is common to find horrific ingredients in make-up and nail polish like formaldehyde and hormone disruptors such as propyl paraben.
The EWG Skin Deep website is a great tool. Its purpose is to rate the toxicity of all major skin, hair and beauty products. Be forewarned, you will become addicted to searching all of your favorite products on this site. It is a huge time waster, in the greatest way.
How it works, from their website, “Skin Deep presents two ratings for products and ingredients, a hazard rating and a data availability rating. •The hazard score, a 0-10 scale from low to high hazard, reflects known and suspected hazards. A product’s hazard rating can be higher than the sum of its parts, if, for example, the product contains chemicals called “penetration enhancers” that increase the amounts of ingredients that soak through the skin. •The data availability rating – none, limited, fair, good or robust — reflects how much scientists know – or don’t know – about an ingredient’s safety.”
Throw away your deodorant and or antiperspirant. Yes, you. Yes, even if it’s a crystal that says, “Does not contain aluminum” and has a pink breast cancer ribbon. Yes, even if it is from that hippy guy in Maine. It does contain aluminum. I’ll get to that.
I have covered the topic of toxic cookware briefly in the past, but I wanted to update the information. First of all, if you still are using Teflon coated cookware, toss it in the trash! Teflon is the brand name for a chemical coating known as PFOA. What is the problem with this coating? This is from About.com/cookware:
“The resulting products contain no or only trace amounts of PFOA, and the Environmental Protection Agency does not have enough information about the product to suggest that using the products could cause a health risk or concern.
However, because this chemical is used in the manufacturing process, it has been found in low levels in the environment and even in the bloodstream of a sample of the U.S. population. It has been found to affect the development of laboratory animals, as well as other adverse effects on their health.”
That is good enough for me. Run. Run away from the Teflon.
I hope your holidays were filled with lots of good friends, family, cheer, fantastic food and drink, laughter and that your guests have all vacated by now.
I’m not one to jump on the New Year’s resolution band wagon. I think it is important to try your best all year and to balance that with enjoyment. I actually did not mean for this to be a “clean up your act, it’s the new year,” kind of post. It just worked out that way. Sorry, I know you are bombarded with these kinds of messages.
However, this is my favorite new discovery in my arsenal of health. Detoxifying with Calcium Bentonite Clay is nothing new, but it’s new to me. The idea is to drink a little of the clay mixed with water upon rising in the morning and before bed for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks your digestive system, colon and liver will be cleansed. Trust me, you will know it has happened (insert gross thoughts here) and you will feel amazing.
