Is it possible that nutrition substitute drinks for diabetics actually contribute to type 2 diabetes?
A relative of mine has type 2 diabetes. His doctor told him to drink Glucerna shakes because it will help to balance his blood sugar and give him nutrients.
But as much as he drinks these shakes, he never seems to get better; only worse. I explained to his wife that he would do better to get nutrients from actual green vegetables like the ones I juice daily. She told me in horror that he just needs to do what his doctor told him.
From where did we get the idea that these drinks are a panacea? I believe from commercials that target trusting care givers, from drug reps that tell doctors that these shakes are actually nourishing and because they are handed out routinely in hospitals. The drug companies do a surprising and alarming amount of doctor education. As far as I know, there are no sales reps for the vegetable industry.
Today, I want to just address the Glucerna shake. Note that Abbott Laboratories makes Glucerna as well as Ensure, PediaSure, and a whole slew of other meal replacement and “nutrition” drinks. Continue reading “Are So-Called Nutrition Drinks Making us Sicker?”
It’s a snow day here in Austin (technically, an icy cold mess, but hey, no school). My 13 year old son made this delicious, double-decker concoction. He also took this photo. Yep, there’s not much to do when your steep driveway is iced over. Of course, there is the obvious, go down said driveway on a knee-board all morning, crash many times, then make a smoothie.
I realized this smoothie had 3 of the 8 most nutrient dense foods (hemp seed – in this case hemp milk, chia seeds and berries) listed by Drew Canole; a juicing and health expert.
Ethan made this with our hand-held emersion blender. Continue reading “Super Food Snow Day Smoothie”
I hope your holidays were filled with lots of good friends, family, cheer, fantastic food and drink, laughter and that your guests have all vacated by now.
I’m not one to jump on the New Year’s resolution band wagon. I think it is important to try your best all year and to balance that with enjoyment. I actually did not mean for this to be a “clean up your act, it’s the new year,” kind of post. It just worked out that way. Sorry, I know you are bombarded with these kinds of messages.
However, this is my favorite new discovery in my arsenal of health. Detoxifying with Calcium Bentonite Clay is nothing new, but it’s new to me. The idea is to drink a little of the clay mixed with water upon rising in the morning and before bed for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks your digestive system, colon and liver will be cleansed. Trust me, you will know it has happened (insert gross thoughts here) and you will feel amazing. “No thanks, we’d rather not know what’s in that box of food stuff,” said the people of Washington state and California.
Not really, they were just bamboozled by brilliant and brilliantly deceptive ad campaigns costing $70 million dollars.
Last year Proposition 37 in California and just this month Ballot Initiative 522 in Washington State asked voters if they wanted mandatory labeling for foods containing GMOs in the respective states. Both states failed to pass labeling laws at about the same margin, 48% yes to 52% no. Continue reading “The Good, the Bad and the Imposter Organic Brands”
