If you are confused by terms like cage-free, grass-fed and pasture-raised you are not alone. I advocate for a whole food, plant-based diet but I know that in the real world, people eat animals. Here are some guidelines and explanations of what you should buy and what to avoid at the grocery store for maximum health.
1) Avoid GMOs – always purchase these products Organic:
- Corn (any corn product such as tortilla chips)
- Soy (tofu, edamame, soy milk)
- Cotton (tampons)
- Sugar beets (anything with sugar)
- Summer squash
- Hawaiian papaya
**Corn, soy and sugar are common ingredients in other products. If the product you are buying is not labeled “Organic” you are eating GMO’s. Continue reading “Navigating the Grocery Store for Maximum Health”
This is a big deal. Emails, text messages and company reports from Monsanto itself showing what has long been suspected; there is a cover up regarding the safety of Roundup, a key component in growing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
Attorneys for Monsanto missed a deadline to submit documents that would keep these records confidential during a lawsuit. The deadline was July 31, 2017 and now the documents are public. I have read some, but I have many more to go. I just couldn’t wait to share this with you and I hope you will share it too.
According to the Organic Consumers Association website, “More than 75 documents, including intriguing text messages and discussions about payments to scientists, were posted for public viewing early Tuesday morning by attorneys who are suing Monsanto on behalf of people alleging Roundup caused them or their family members to become ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The attorneys posted the documents which total more than 700 pages on the website for the law firm Baum Hedlund Aristei, Goldman…”

It is important to be informed when it comes to choosing a sunscreen. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer is on the rise. There is no conclusive evidence about why this is occurring, but there seems to be a link to UVA exposure over the years; especially getting sunburns as a child.
There are two types of rays, UVA and UVB. UVA or just UV rays are more damaging and penetrate deeper into the skin. They are responsible for accelerated aging, may suppress the immune system and may cause skin cancer. Continue reading “How to Select the Best Sunscreen”
These sauce/dressing recipes are from the legendary macrobiotic restaurant, Casa de Luz in Austin, TX. Use sparingly, especially if you are on a low-fat vegan plan. This is what I consider a treat and I mostly use these to top some steamed greens.
The Casa de Luz recipes are notorious for having to be tweaked, so taste and tweak. Thin out with water to use as salad dressing.
Pepita (pumpkin seed) Cilantro Sauce
1 c. pumpkin seeds toasted
2 c. cilantro leaves
1 – 1 ½ c. water
2 Tbsp. lemon juice, freshly squeezed Continue reading “Special Seed Dressings and Sauces”
I am always on the hunt for better, less toxic beauty and personal care products that work. This is the latest list of things I love. My friend Nicki recently spent the night and verified these products as “girlfriend sharing” worthy. It was evident that I had some winners when she placed an order to 100% Pure and Josie Maran before even leaving my house.
To find out how safe or toxic your favorite health and beauty products are, search for them here: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
I use a lot of products from Alba Botanica. They are free of parabens, phthalates and the company does not perform animal testing. They did not score the lowest that one can score on the toxicity scale at https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ but mainly because there is information missing.

I know it’s cliche but the new year is a good time to begin better habits. There is no better habit to adopt than eating a plant-based diet. I’ve made it easy to get the staples that you will need.
*MUST BE ORGANIC because it is on the dirty dozen list or may contain GMOs if it is not. Do you need your dirty dozen (most highly pesticided produce) and clean fifteen (can be conventional) list again? Don’t forget, that greens and hot peppers are super pesticided! https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/
Produce (go crazy, these are the basics)
Fruits – be sure to refer to the dirty dozen list! Continue reading “Plant-based Grocery List”
Dig around in the back seats of any minivan or car in America and you’ll likely turn up some Cheerios and Goldfish. It’s hard to believe that something that millions of moms and dads trustingly feed to their toddlers and children, contains dangerous amounts of glyphosate, the main ingredient found in Roundup herbicide.
The Detox Project conducts independent research to see what chemicals are found in food, water and our bodies.
This is from the Detox Project’s press release, ““Frankly, such a high level of glyphosate contamination found in Cheerios, Doritos, Oreos and Stacy’s Pita Chips are alarming and should be a wake-up call for any parent trying to feed their children safe, healthy and non-toxic food,” said Dave Murphy, Executive Director of Food Democracy Now!, a grassroots advocacy organization based in Iowa with more than 650,000 members, that commissioned the new glyphosate residue food tests.”
Also making the list of foods with high levels of glyphosate were Annie’s Gluten Free Bunny Cookies cocoa and vanilla and Kashi Organic Promise.
