Easy Plant-based Dinner

cooked flattzaWhether you are exhausted from all the back-to-school activities or just want a quick meal, this is an easy vegan dinner. This takes about five to ten minutes of prep and about 15 minutes of cook time. Best of all, it’s a healthy meal that can feed a family.

If you live in Texas, you can buy this Flatzza at H-E-B in the pizza/sauce section. It will serve as the pizza crust. There are two crusts per bag. FlattzaYou can also order it online or find something similar. Next, break out the marinara sauce. I like the Whole Foods fat-free marinara sauce or the Engine 2 brand. Top with your favorite vegetables. I used red onion, arugula, mushrooms, pepperoncinis and baked it at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Then I topped it with more fresh arugula, red pepper flakes and garlic powder. Serve with or without a salad. There you have your, “I’m too damn tired to cook,” dinner.

How to Select the Best Sunscreen

sunscreen2It is important to be informed when it comes to choosing a sunscreen. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer is on the rise. There is no conclusive evidence about why this is occurring, but there seems to be a link to UVA exposure over the years; especially getting sunburns as a child.

There are two types of rays, UVA and UVB. UVA or just UV rays are more damaging and penetrate deeper into the skin. They are responsible for accelerated aging, may suppress the immune system and may cause skin cancer. Continue reading “How to Select the Best Sunscreen”

Non-toxic Health and Beauty Products 2017 Edition

beauty_products17I am always on the hunt for better, less toxic beauty and personal care products that work. This is the latest list of things I love. My friend Nicki recently spent the night and verified these products as “girlfriend sharing” worthy. It was evident that I had some winners when she placed an order to 100% Pure and Josie Maran before even leaving my house.

To find out how safe or toxic your favorite health and beauty products are, search for them here: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

I use a lot of products from Alba Botanica. They are free of parabens, phthalates and the company does not perform animal testing. They did not score the lowest that one can score on the toxicity scale at https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ but mainly because there is information missing.

A Good Explanation of the DARK Act

obama-signs-dark-actIt is important to understand how the organic label is being diluted. It is also imperative to understand the implications of the DARK Act that was just signed into law by President Obama.

The most harmful thing is this bill preempts any state labeling laws and reverses the Vermont GMO labeling law that was in effect for a matter of days before being reversed.

Living MaxWell is a great blog by Max Goldberg. He explains what this bill means to consumers. Please read and share.

Are Statins Bad for You?

You betcha. Statins are the most over-prescribed medication in the United States. MIT scientist, Dr. Raymond Francis says that statin users increase their risk of type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, muscle weakness, liver disease memory loss, and HEART FAILURE.

I am not a doctor. Please do not stop taking your statin without consulting your physician. You should however, do more research on a healthy plant-based diet. I recommend Dr. Esselstyn’s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease book and website.

California Wines Test Positive for Round-up Weed Killer

California wines contain poison. According to Moms Across America, 100% of the wine they tested were positive for Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Round-up weed killer; even the organic wine.

For this reason I recently switched to mostly French and Italian wines. The French wines take some getting used to but are completely worth changing your palate. I’ll take less drinkable over toxins any day.

Cilantro serrano

A plant-based diet can be unbelievably delicious, satisfying and best of all, guilt-free. The key to a tasty plant-based meal is in the sauce.
